WeMo Scooter, an electric scooter sharing company, plans to add at least 720 new electric scooters to expand its service area in Kaohsiung. The company links the shared transportation service to the tourism industry to satisfy tourists’ demand for mobility services. The service is scheduled to be available after the Lunar New Year in several popular tourist spots including Lotus Pond, Shoushan Zoo, and Cijin.
WeMo Scooter’s current service area includes Zuoying, Nanzih, MRT Kaisyuan Station, and Cianjhen Export Processing Zone. After the Lunar New Year, the company will gradually cover its service in major traffic areas and residential areas in districts including Sanmin, Gushan, Cianjin, and Sinsing. WeMo Scooter offers smart, green scooters that riders can rent and return instantly using a mobile APP. It partners with MeNGo monthly pass issued by the Transportation Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government to connect its service with public transportation such as buses and MRT. Monthly pass holders can redeem 600 MeNGo points to ride the electric scooters free of charge for the first 12 minutes. The shared electric scooters connect the first mile and the last mile, realizing a smart, affordable, and green transportation service.
The Transportation Bureau states that the Kaohsiung City Government puts much effort in building a low-carbon, sustainable city by actively promoting new types of transportation services. In response to the development of shared vehicles, the city government has formulated relevant self-government ordinances and management regulations. Currently, companies providing shared vehicle services in Kaohsiung include Gokube (electric bikes), WeMo Scooter, and iRent (electric scooters). The city government aims to lower the rates of car ownership and the use of private vehicles, which will help reduce air pollution and foster green, smart city development of Kaohsiung.
